About this artwork
This artwork is inspired by the coexistence of ancient Japanese aesthetics and the fast-paced rhythm of contemporary Tokyo. Traditional cloud-painting motifs and gilded screen culture meet the dense, electric blue cityscapes of Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Roppongi. I hope viewers feel a sense of discovery—seeing how heritage and modernity overlap, how the city’s future continuously rises through layers of memory. As media i chose a mix of rice, koji,… and gold acrylic paste to honor Japan’s food traditions that pass through generations, becoming a common ground to experience old and new. The style blends traditional byobu screen composition with contemporary linework to portray Tokyo as both timeless and ever-changing.
Pavel Sipkin, also known as PAVS, is a Russian-born, Tokyo-based artist and architect who paints extraordinary urban narratives infused with his architectural insight. His technique fuses hyperreal precision with surreal, poetic undertones, blurring boundaries between art and architecture, reality and imagination. Through intricate brushwork and a delicate balance of detail and abstraction, he reimagines cityscapes, inviting contemplation of everyday moments. Sipkin’s work radiates a magnetic tension between permanence and impermanence, ultimately inspiring viewers to rediscover wonder and hidden meaning in daily life’s overlooked details.
