About this artwork
Penny is a figurative painter, particularly influenced by action painting and a form of gestural abstraction. Once the ballet figure is drawn onto her canvas Penny paints rapidly and intensely, throwing and splattering the oil paint. The emphasis is on action and chance which involves risks and but she exploits the accidents that cannot be avoided and as a result, each ballet painting is unique. The strong colours she uses, particularly reds, play…
a big part in expressing energy and passion in her ballet paintings. Penny paints in oils because for her no other medium gives quite the depth, richness, and vividness of colour.

« The visual expression of passion, energy and movement within my paintings comes from the risks I take throughout the painting process. »
Penny Warden has extensively exhibited her paintings throughout the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France and the United States. A figurative painter, her artistic style is influenced by action painting and gestural abstraction. Warden’s series depicts dancers, horses, as well as Christian themes, in motion. She begins by painting each background on canvas, then sketches the figure before applying oils with the maximum degree of spontaneity.
