About this artwork
This work tells no story, there is no object in the picture. The painting itself is the object. The title "fall out" describes something that is not visible. Gulden does not begin his paintings with a specific idea of what the picture should look like. The sequence of the painting actions is purely intuitive. Little by little, images become visible, which he discards until something exciting for him has emerged. The images he is looking for require…
depth, which is usually created through many overlays. The final image always appears suddenly and unexpectedly. Although he doesn't think of the images in advance and then implement them, it is still surprising that the themes change little over decades. This painting was started in 1991 and completed in 2020.

« Max Frei brings the memory of things into play. Things pick up the events in which they participate. Difficult enough to learn about it from animals or plants, but from things? Why not? Humans invented smoke signals, speaking clouds. Characters carved in stone. Learned to read tracks. And don't we talk every day to the devices that we invented to be in contact with the whole world? So why not ask the clouds or the river. The river whose waves are complex mirrors. The clouds that are like thoughts, constantly changing, incomprehensibly diverse. »
