About this artwork
This is my second tribute portrait of Prince. I wanted to make a special portrait of the way he looked during the time when Purple Rain came out. He had quite a few iconic looks and the purple rain look was one of my favorites. In this piece I used paper mostly sourced in the streets of Amsterdam mixed with a Purple Rain movie poster. Some of the paper like the brown paper in the left upper corner is from the Paradiso club in Amsterdam where Prince…
performed a few times.
I found it underneath a thick layer of posters dating back almost 10 years. This piece of poster was one of the oldest layers from that spot. The paper is glued onto a deep dark purple canvas. The portrait is lasercut from the collage. In this portrait I tried to capture the characteristics of Prince as minimalistic as I could to contrast the chaotic collaged background.

« What I do with my portraits is I peel off the excess, layer by layer, to get to the true essence. I leave out any unnecessary lines. »
