About this artwork
This piece was born out of frustration with my artistic direction. By the time Ancient & Free came to life, I had already begun and abandoned, two different paintings on the same canvas. During that period, I was reading Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and the work ultimately emerged from that experience; the emotions stirred by the book, and my reflections on freedom and the things we’ve lost.
Peter Gray, a self-taught painter working mainly with acrylics, began his creative journey at seventeen and now devotes himself full-time to art. His style, rooted in contemporary portraiture and modern surrealist imagery, is marked by instinctive, expressive brushwork that invites a dynamic, evolving experience. Through his art, he seeks to evoke a profound emotional connection, encouraging viewers to discover the enduring calm and quiet strength found within life’s fleeting moments.
