About this artwork
This artwork deals with the land that was taken from American indians when european settlers came to settle in the United States. Where I live now was once land that the Potawatomi tribe of American Indians used to live. The treaty of prairie du chien gave the Potawatomi 1280 Acres of land in 1839. But in 1849 the US government said they had abandoned the land so they took the 1280 acres back and sold it to the settlers. The other part of this… is the Trail of Tears where American Indian tribes where marched 1200 miles to Oklahoma to a new reservation. During that march 10,000 American Indians died. The crosses are for those that died on the Trail of Tears. Finally the upside down cross symbolizes martyrdom. Saint Peter asked to be hung upside because he was not worthy of Christ.
« Each painting I make is a search for a spiritual understanding of who I am as an artist and who I can become as a human being. »
Peter Locascio is an American artist whose works have been widely exhibited in the United States. He believes that creating art is more of a spiritual journey than a materialistic one. Locascio's compositions are inspired by Aboriginal, Native American, and Hindu art forms, etc. While some of his pieces convey narratives, others are simply whimsical. He favors painting with oils on canvas.
