About this artwork
Postage Stamp Collage
This picture is composed of approximately 2800 used postage stamps .The stamp colours are not altered and post marks are still visible on close observation. Cubic Space Division is inspired by a lithograph by M. C. Escher. In 1952 Escher was making particular explorations into perspective. He had been interested in a pen drawing (1549) by Albrecht Durer showing the artist demonstrating certain principles of perspective looking… through a sheet of glass while sketching the portrait of a male model on to the glass. Escher experimented making a drawing of different sized cubes being linked by square rods (rather like scaffolding at a building construction site). From his drawing he developed the idea further in a black and white lithographic print. I have taken the idea further still adding colour, the mixture of which takes the eye through the structure into space beyond the objects adding tonally another dimension of perspective.

Peter Mason, originally a passionate art educator, morphs unique British definitive recycled postage stamps no longer available. Featuring the late Queen Elizabeth the stamps are styled into unique collage masterpieces, drawing on Pop Art influences like Warhol and Lichtenstein, often paying tribute to other fashionable artists. His technique involves meticulously assembling the stamps to form pixelated portraits and scenes, a nod to historical mosaic and pointillism traditions, reborn through a more modern perspective. His artworks exude a vibrant celebration of culture and iconography, urging his audience to view familiar imagery with renewed perception and awe.
