At the heart of the work is a continuous process of reassembly, disruption and reconstruction. Peter Vahlefeld takes an overpainted image of a poster for the Royal Academy of Arts’ exhibition on Abstract Expressionism in London as his starting point.
In this richly layered and tactile work, he transforms the overpainted image into a dynamic interplay… of colour, texture and light. Layers of paint and pigment prints are repeatedly built up, overpainted and stripped back, revealing fragments while concealing others. Gold, silver and copper pigments become embedded within the surface, catching and reflecting the light.
Different varnishes, UV coatings and oil paint further intensify this effect: light is absorbed, reflected and diffused across the canvas, creating a sense of depth and an ever-changing pictorial space.

Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
