Peter Vahlefeld creates his artworks by harvesting museum ads from magazines, overpainting them, and carving them up on canvas. Vahlefeld then modifies his paintings endlessly, adding and subtracting colors, layers, and shapes until they reach their own decisive moment.… The engagement with the grid — a visual structure that lies at the heart of graphic design — gets overpainted by oils, acrylics, different mediums, and varnishes, while the brushstrokes move in front of and behind the set grid following and disrupting its order. The various parts merge into a unique amalgam of painting, printing, and appropriation of text.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
