It seems that Peter Vahlefeld has recognised many of his own conundrums at the Metropolitan Opera, where fragments and other signs of its regimented, controlling past are visible alongside the more chaotic present. The ambiguous relationship between surface and depth, paint and prints, the continuous process of revealing and concealing… is a theme that runs through the series of work. In this painting barriers are erected and breached. Systems are evoked, then subverted, grids are laid down then encroached upon, and lettering is made partially illegible. The artwork has been constructed by sanding down into layers of color and prints, which, like geological strata, have already been laid down. The canvas is a vibrant community where your eyes are led to cul-de-sacs, dead ends, and places where you get lost. For both paintings you will recieve 10% discount.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
Peter Vahlefeld has participated in many solo exhibitions in Germany as well as in annual art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe.
