The basis of the artwork is an overpainted auction cover, which serves as an underpainting that loops behind expressionist brushwork. Peter vahlefelds’ vibrant artwork is a celebration of the expressive possibilities of color to evoke an emotional response. He doesn’t believe a painting can ever be truly abstract, and… that tension excites him. To him, abstraction means that the material and process are essential to the schematics of the painting, and the sets of relationships between colors, mark-making, overpainting, text, and surface. Words and phrases snatched from the ad copy – »19th Century«, and »Sotheby’s« are echoed suggestively and loom through obfuscating veils of paint.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
Peter Vahlefeld has participated in many solo exhibitions in Germany as well as in annual art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe.
