The question of the relationship between reality and image, indirectly expressed in each image, also preoccupies Peter Vahlefeld. Thus, he connects the media reality of print media with the media reality of painting in countless layers, playing an intelligent game of confusion in the web of relationships between reality, the image of reality, and the art-historical context. Just as in real life, it is all about surfaces, image, and desire. The overpaintings… of these serve as the "painting ground" for his works on canvas and paper. "When he paints over the existing media reality, it loses its power for all to see," says Vahlefeld about his approach. Some motifs thus mutate into completely abstract color compositions, while other images still reveal representational details such as typography or figuration. Vahlefeld digitizes and samples his overpaintings, continues painting on the computer, and transfers parts of it as pigmented prints onto canvas.
« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
Peter Vahlefeld has participated in many solo exhibitions in Germany as well as in annual art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe.
