About this artwork
The Castlepoint Lighthouse stands on a rugged area of coast on the east coast of New Zealand near the bottom of the North Island & although I have never visited the site, I have heard much about it. I was interested in painting this iconic scene & found an excellent reference photo. It is still a work in progress but a lovely scene.

Peter Whitcombe is a New Zealand-based fine artist with a background in graphic design and printing. Drawing on this creative foundation, Peter has transitioned into fine art, where he now works primarily with oils and acrylics to capture the diverse beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes.
His work spans a wide range of scenery—from tranquil farmlands and dramatic waterfalls to iconic destinations that showcase the country’s natural splendour. With a focus on realism, Peter’s paintings are known for their lifelike detail, clarity, and vibrant colour.
Initially working in acrylics for their fast drying time, Peter now prefers oils for their richness and ability to maintain brightness over time. This shift has allowed him to bring greater depth and luminosity to his work.
