About this artwork
I was keen to paint this scene mainly because of the broody skies which are very powerful!
However, the lonely dinghy sitting in the dune grasses is also interesting & I found myself wondering about the stories it could tell.

Peter Whitcombe is a New Zealand-based fine artist with a background in graphic design and printing. Drawing on this creative foundation, Peter has transitioned into fine art, where he now works primarily with oils and acrylics to capture the diverse beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes.
His work spans a wide range of scenery—from tranquil farmlands and dramatic waterfalls to iconic destinations that showcase the country’s natural splendour. With a focus on realism, Peter’s paintings are known for their lifelike detail, clarity, and vibrant colour.
Initially working in acrylics for their fast drying time, Peter now prefers oils for their richness and ability to maintain brightness over time. This shift has allowed him to bring greater depth and luminosity to his work.
