About this artwork
The portrait of a young woman. Her mouth is taped shut; she wants to scream, but is clearly unable to. The despair is only visible in her wide-open eyes and the hands under her hair. The word SHOUT is the only expression of her powerlessness on the tape over her mouth—and the voice she no longer has. She has been silenced. Painted in May 2021, this is, of course, a metaphor for the powerlessness one felt as a citizen in the face of authority—and…
unfortunately, nothing has improved in the meantime; freedom of expression is being gradually restricted, and taboos are increasing. The painting was composed to the song "Shout" by Tears for Fears, playing on a loop. This small-format painting is signed only on the back. However, I will sign it on the front upon request, but then it will not be available until February 2026 (I am currently abroad; the painting is in my studio in Austria).

Petra Kaindel is an Austrian artist whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Japan. She feels that a single painting can sometimes be mysterious, while a series of images placed together is a biography. Kaindel's compositions explore gender roles, beauty and consumerism, and dehumanization, while also conveying a sense of loneliness and disorientation in a world of seemingly unlimited possibilities.
