About this artwork
The sculpture is a combination of control and chance. There is strict control over the outer circle but control inside is only partial. Everything inside is the result of controlled… guidance, largely haphazard and random, determined by the bronze itself. It is a joy for pareidoliacs.
Sand-casting is quite different from the lost wax technique more commonly used for sculpture – using a pattern that is deliberately very thin in places there is no telling where the bronze will fail to run and create intriguing shapes. Collaboration with chance is a fascinating process that produces delightful outcomes.
The bronze ring turns freely on a Cumbrian slate base, allowing eithewr face or any angle to be chosen.
