About this artwork
Since the start of 2020, Phil Tyler has embarked on a new body of paintings
collectively entitled the Configurations series. These recent paintings have their roots in his abstract paintings from the 1980s, where he was concerned with gestural abstraction and the formal interplay between positive marks and negative space.
He was interested in a kind of pictorial architecture that spanned the space of the canvas and created a series of visual tensions.…
By the late 90’s, he began a series of still life paintings of tables, chairs, and other domestic objects. These explored the tenta¬tive and often fragile intimate relationships of the home. The motifs would eventual¬ly transform into groups of figures in and around gallery spaces, as he became fascinated with their various grouping

Philip Tyler is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker based in the United Kingdom whose works have been exhibited in England and Poland. In addition, his art is featured in the permanent collections of the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, the Peterborough City Gallery, etc. Tyler is fascinated by images that fuse physicality with opticality, which he refers to as "the idea of chaos and exactitude".
