About this artwork
For the Ancients, there are unwritten laws that are a matter of custom and respect for the gods, and written laws instituted by men. The distinction between these two types of prescription is highlighted by the tragic heroine Antigone, in the play by Sophocles that bears her… name. When her uncle refuses to bury Polynices, who has attacked her brother and his own city, she maintains that the unwritten laws of the gods, which impose the ritual treatment of corpses, take precedence over the political laws of men.
