About this artwork
This print documents the teamwork involved in all aspects of sailing, in particular hoisting the sails. Fully immersed at sea, what it means to be human is made apparent: trust, communication, and teamwork. This profound unity between people and their environment is one I understand first hand, transitioning from a crew trainee to volunteer sea staff over the last five years.
This day was one of fifty days I spent at sea last summer as part of… immersive research for a series of works about UK Sail Training Charities. Home for the week was a Baltic Trader: Queen Galadriel, where through the challenges of offshore sailing, the transformation of eleven young people took place.
