This painting depicts a fleeting moment from a parade after a race from Lisbon to Cádiz. Welsh banners and flags fly as a procession of young people from the vessel Challenge Wales wind their way through the streets of Cádiz.
This day was one of fifty days I spent at sea as part of immersive research for a series of works documenting the transformation of young people onboard UK Sail Training vessels (charities). Fully immersed at sea, what it… means to be human is made apparent: trust, communication, and teamwork. This profound unity between people and their environment is one I understand first hand, transitioning from a crew trainee to volunteer sea staff over the last five years.
