About this artwork
I have lived in the US in a time of social unrest, shocked by the violence of political discourse, the continuous reference to 2nd amendment to justify armed gangs, the no-vax, or the absolute reluctance against taxes and welfare, in a time also where movements such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter didn’t really create a change. My professional background helps me trying to stay alert and read a lot of foreign policy such as the surge… of Trumpism, MAGA, the attacks on the civil society, on media, universities or the judges and the disruption of checks and balances. This one concept I cannot forgo: true liberty is only generated by law, it is a process that needs constant work and tends to crumble down easily. There must be an underpinning strong moral compass that says beware to false absolute categories, prohibitions such as the total ban of immigrants or the complete ban on alcohol. he idea I find most disruptive is the libertarian demand to be free as a bird.
Pier Forlano is an multimedia artist known for his impactful expression of the concept of fragility, be it psychological, political or territorial. He uses tree bark, paper layering or model figurines and techniques that vary from acrylic to collage, from bas-relief to miniature dioramas. The main tenets of his production are sculpted paintings that add a depth to the vision. Recurrently he deals with themes of separation from other human beings, from nature and the desire to recuperate feeling and tackle unconscious taboos. Tribal art, surrealism, symbolism and graffiti art remain his possible inspirational starting blocks, together with big political topics such as environment and the populist parties. The Palais des Beaux Arts of Charleroi is presently showing two of his works. He believes that the task of an artist is to shine a light on the untold and uncomfortable or to reveal a strong emotion. His concept of fine art reclaims good composition and intensity of the message.
