About this artwork
This painting was inspired by the appearance of catch-all or populist parties in Europe around 2010. These are entities that seek to attract everybody promising whatever, use strong identity rhetoric to instill a sense of danger and forget about any ideology. They tend to colonize all the public sector and to transform into autarchies. So I imagined that in the belly of the State a party is sowing the seeds of monopoly of power. Shady ploys take…
place, the rules are capsized to fit personal appetites and hidden agendas. Their public agenda on the other end is a bit of an improvisation and no matter about the contradictions. The cadres are exploiting all the industrial fabric and reassembling it to please their cronies and minions. The populist propaganda needs to foster a permanent state of war, precise tribal borders and us-against-them narrative. This iconic work of my production has been leased to the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi.

Pier Forlano is an multimedia artist known for his impactful expression of the concept of fragility, be it psychological, political or territorial. He uses tree bark, paper layering or model figurines and techniques that vary from acrylic to collage, from bas-relief to miniature dioramas. The main tenets of his production are sculpted paintings that add a depth to the vision. Recurrently he deals with themes of separation from other human beings, from nature and the desire to recuperate feeling and tackle unconscious taboos. Tribal art, surrealism, symbolism and graffiti art remain his possible inspirational starting blocks, together with big political topics such as environment and the populist parties. The Palais des Beaux Arts of Charleroi is presently showing two of his works. He believes that the task of an artist is to shine a light on the untold and uncomfortable or to reveal a strong emotion. His concept of fine art reclaims good composition and intensity of the message.
