This work was inspired by the feeling of total dislocation when I was posted to Bulgaria in my first assignment as a diplomat in 1990. Very tough years but also a great opportunity to witness the rebirth of a country after the communist epoch. I wanted to inquire about the different perceptions that a territory can generate, by using different media and describing not just the objective map but also the subjective experience. Hence the landscape… strewn with human shapes, a man lying idle, storing up expedience but unable to produce anything other than pouring himself a drink. I used wooden fabric printing blocks from India and worked around an old map of Europe. The painting has been a real icon of my production and I hope it conveys a feeling of overall dynamic harmony.
Pier Forlano is an multimedia artist known for his impactful expression of the concept of fragility, be it psychological, political or territorial. He uses tree bark, paper layering or model figurines and techniques that vary from acrylic to collage, from bas-relief to miniature dioramas. The main tenets of his production are sculpted paintings that add a depth to the vision. Recurrently he deals with themes of separation from other human beings, from nature and the desire to recuperate feeling and tackle unconscious taboos. Tribal art, surrealism, symbolism and graffiti art remain his possible inspirational starting blocks, together with big political topics such as environment and the populist parties. The Palais des Beaux Arts of Charleroi is presently showing two of his works. He believes that the task of an artist is to shine a light on the untold and uncomfortable or to reveal a strong emotion. His concept of fine art reclaims good composition and intensity of the message.
