About this artwork
In The Protector, the elephant stands as a metaphor for the inner transformation you had to undergo to protect your family on a life-or-death journey. The animal, a universal symbol of strength, memory, and resilience, reflects the figure of the father who becomes a shield, carrying the fears and dangers upon himself so that his family may move forward with hope. The spiraling lines that make up the texture not only convey movement and energy, but… also the emotional tension of a journey marked by crossed borders, extreme risks, and the constant threat of losing everything. Each stroke seems to contain a fragment of pain, courage, and faith, building a skin of experiences that shape the protector. The contrast between the warm tones of the elephant's body and the greens and blues of the environment evoke the struggle between danger and refuge, chaos and hope. Thus, the work becomes a pictorial testimony of a personal transformation: a man who abandons vulnerability.
Rafael Hernández Morales is a Cuban-American visual painter based in Orlando, with a background in art education and a career marked by the exploration of identity and transformation. He employs a mixed-media approach, characterized by detailed hyperrealism, texture, and sculptural depth, fusing relief, light, and color to construct three-dimensional works. His conceptual and virtuosic style conveys powerful messages about freedom, memory, and resilience, inviting the viewer to reflect and feel hope, strength, and authenticity in the face of the experience of exile and personal growth.
