About this artwork
Scripture Of The Drowned
by Raven Dubh
Scripture Of The Drowned unfolds like a forbidden passage torn from an ancient tome, where story and sea collapse into one. From the open book, turbulent waters surge forward, carrying a ghostly vessel caught between fate and memory. A lone raven cuts through the storm-dark sky, its presence a silent witness to loss, omen, and endurance.
Light burns from the heart of the pages, as if the book itself remembers… what the ocean has taken. The sea is not merely depicted—it escapes its written confines, dissolving the boundary between myth and reality. This work explores themes of forgotten histories, drowned truths, and the power of stories that refuse to remain buried. The Idea for this painting came to me while visiting a library in Ireland after seeing their collection of old books
Annette O Reilly, originally from Dublin and trained at the Burren College of Art, primarily paints in oils under the name Raven Dubh, channeling her deep connection to the wild landscapes of the West of Ireland. She masterfully blends tones to create gothic fantasy works, often working in black and white with a striking splash of color to enhance emotion and contrast, evoking mystery and depth through symbolism and atmospheric storytelling. Her art radiates a haunting sense of dark beauty, inviting the viewer to experience emotion, transformation, and reflection within the interplay of light and shadow.
