About this artwork
Walking the back streets in urban Hong Kong, I found this picturesque wall crowded with post or mailboxes. All the boxes were individually painted and decorated in vibrant colors. It seemed to me that the characters behind each box had come to life, and it brought to my imagination a whole world of hidden faces.
Raymond Andrews is a painter with a background rooted in East London, South Africa, and extensive training in wood engraving, painting, and sculpture under renowned artists. He uses oil paint on carved or engraved wooden panels, rubbing in oxides and pigments and occasionally gilding, resulting in richly textured, incised surfaces that blend European complexity with African vibrancy. His evocative works explore natural themes, mythology, and fantasy through a personal visual language of symbols, aiming to awaken the viewer’s sense of forgotten dreams, hope, and the possibility of living in gratitude and celebration. Raymond has exhibited in one man-shows many times in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Botswana, as well as many group exhibitions in these African Countries and abroad.
