About this artwork
I was inspired to create "Minerva" about a month or more after my city shut down due to Covid19. I'd run out of particular colors of ink I'd been using, so I used the reds and oranges I did have. But I'd wanted to make a change for some time and often the best way to change or move forward is to do something "drastic," which, for me was quite simple. My style had become very tight, but my drawings were quite loose - freer. I wanted to adopt that…
style to my larger-scale work on paper and canvas: to let imagery "happen," allowing forms to move into and meld with others, and not be as attached to making an area perfect. Collaged elements are essential parts of the piece, intensifying and invigorating the space. In addition, I wanted to give the overall picture plane more breathing space, more areas I didn't feel compelled to fill with imagery and could leave open. As this series continues I am continually reinvigorated to create compelling, new work.

Rebecca Jacoby is an American painter who has extensively exhibited in the United States. Although her art reflects colors that do not often appear in the natural world, the images in her compositions are inspired by the woods and mountains of New England. Jacoby's abstract style is conveyed through multiple mediums, which include acrylics, oils, ink, markers, pens, etc. She also incorporates elements of collage in her colorful artistic works.
