About this artwork
Due to the recent COVID pandemic, we all have spent a lot of time alone. These Dinner-Plate-Portraits were inspired by my longing for the past when it was common to share lively conversation over dinner. These images are based on photographs of transfer-ware plates from the late 1800's, superimposed on handwriting taken from the civil war era. Inspired by recent events, these Dinner-Plate-Portraits are a compilation of an antiquated art form: handwriting,…
with allegorical dinner plates, created with the intent of evoking the romance of the past; when close conversation with friends and family was a daily occurrence.

« My work is about the art of communication, and how communication and belief are interconnected. »
Renee Bott is an American artist whose works are based on the intricate lines found in both etchings and engravings from the 15th-17th centuries. She examines stories, images, text, and handwriting from the past as a way of understanding "how we got here today". Bott collects her source materials from museums, antique print dealers, and private collections. She photographs the prints and uses digital programs to modify the images, which serve as general outlines for her unique compositions.
