About this artwork
'The wave' 2023.
This painting is a semi abstract landscape and seascape, with collage, that encompasses elements and views of the St. Helier Marina Jersey. Boats, water, structure, masts, buildings and waves. The upscaled wave, centre picture, was taken from a detail of a previous painting, 'Behind a face'. As with elements of other paintings I investigate them further and scale them up as a continual practice development. As with all my palettes… it was dependent on the first colour chosen and then progressed from there, without being predetermined. The three boats in shore relate to three human beings and their lives at sea.
The original painting of 'The wave' was painted in 2023 with acrylic paint and collage on Saunders Waterford watercolour paper 420gsm. The dimensions of the visible painting are 53 cm x 73 cm with a 1cm border.
The painting is signed by the artist.
Enclosed with the painting is also a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

« The creative mind in search for the unknown is the antithesis of futility. »
One of the key themes in Rian Hotton's art is his choice of palette, with which he happily takes risks. While he paints, Hotton listens to audiobooks on a wide range of topics, which influences the subjects of his pieces, almost as if they are a visual diary. He describes his painting style as 'boldly unorthodox', using both oils and acrylics.
