About this artwork
Small-format work (12” x12”) that is part of a series I began 2020 with the purpose of highlighting our African heritage in the Caribbean, a fundamental root of the cultural blend we now recognize as cimarrón or creole. In this piece, I used flowers native to the region as a metaphor for a symbolic pilgrimage through the different Caribbean islands and territories, celebrating their diversity and cultural richness. The plantain, featured in the… composition, carries a special significance as one of the most emblematic symbols of Dominican identity—so much so that it has been embraced in public arenas by major figures and popularly recognized within the diaspora as plátano power. This work was presented at the Allentown Art Museum during the conference Artists of the African Diaspora, reaffirming the dialogue between memory, identity, and belonging that defines my artistic practice.
Rigo Peralta is a Dominican-born painter, printmaker, and visual artist whose surrealist background fuses Caribbean vibrancy with global sophistication. He masterfully combines raw and synthetic materials, layering textured brushstrokes and intricate printmaking, to unite human anatomy with mystical and mechanical forms in a style he terms “conditioned surrealism.” His artworks brim with drama and symbolism, awakening viewers to a tapestry of hidden elements and inviting deep reflection on memory, identity, and the complex dualities of modern life—evoking both celebration and awe.
