About this artwork
The God of Wind is considers wind as an omnipresent power—unseen, immeasurable in form, yet capable of shaping landscapes, bodies, and belief systems with undeniable force.
Built through dense, layered oil application, the painting emphasizes motion, pressure, and turbulence. Circular movement and directional energy suggest both containment and release, reflecting the dual nature of wind as something that cannot be held, only experienced. The surface… carries evidence of its own making, reinforcing the idea of force acting over time rather than a single decisive gesture.
Rather than depicting a figure or narrative god, Wingrove approaches divinity as a human construct born from awe, vulnerability, and the need to give shape to what exceeds control. The God of Wind is a contemporary relic of that impulse—less an object of worship, more of humanity's reverence for the unseen and reducing creed to a personal level.
Rob Wingrove, a painter with a BFA from the University of Minnesota, works primarily in oil paints but boldly incorporates mixed media such as glass beads, fishing lures, coins, and sand. His intricate surrealistic technique involves layering, glosses, and epoxy, creating multifaceted works that play with light and invite shifting perspectives as the viewer engages with them. Wingrove’s art explores the wonder of nature, ancient symbology, and humanity’s quest for meaning, offering emotionally resonant pieces that awe, inspire, and provoke thoughtful introspection.
Rob Wingrove's works are internationally collected, with pieces in Germany, Jamaica, China, and the USA.
