About this artwork
The Plexus Series is a group of works that start from a purely abstract or gestural origin. The work is not pre-determined by imagery but is defined by on-going decision making until he feels the project is resolved. Fractured architectural references and abstract geometry, reminiscent of technological or virtual maps, combine to create ambiguous, semi-abstract landscapes.
Imagery is layered with the patterns of collaged advertising paper, industrial… paint and varnish and finished with oil and acrylic. While retaining hints of representation woven into the surface, these abstractions have an undefined scale and perspective, and, for Robert, explore feelings of alienation, anonymity and absence in crowded virtual or physical spaces.

Robert Battams is a British artist, living and working in Sheffield. He studied sculpture at the University of the Arts London, but has since focused dominently on painting and printmaking. As a result, Battams creates work in a variety of media, while always retaining a sculptural fascination with structures, architecture, surface quality, texture and material interaction.
