This painting is called Hacking Heron as it takes many of its colours from a painting by the traditional abstract British artist Patrick Heron. But Robert then took these colours and used them in his own inspirational chaotic fashion to try to create surprising beauty through his unconventional approach that twists traditions. In essence he "hacked" the Heron painting by taking the colours and then using them in his own way like stealing notes from…
a song. He then covered this work with his trademark black and white Distortion Forms, a metaphor for noise, chaos and distortion. The Jesus and Mary Chain wrote pretty "Beach Boys" like pop songs but then covered them with noise and distortion and feedback. In a similar fashion Robert paints ‘pretty’ colourful paintings and then covers them with black and white "Distortion Forms", a visual metaphor for the noise and distortion used by the Jesus and Mary Chain.
