About this artwork
JOE STRUMMER
I never saw The Clash, but I knew their records. They were my introduction to politics, proving that music and politics could work hand in hand, as well as be visceral and dynamic. They also looked dead cool - around the time of 'London Calling', bassist Paul Simonon was the first punk I saw in a suit.
I loved the Pogues, and on the gigs promoting their album IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD, Joe was a guest. He came out and blasted… through 'London Calling' and 'I Fought the Law', further heightening the scenes of joyous mayhem in Brixton Academy. When Shane MacGowan had to leave the Pogues, Joe stood in, having produced Shane's final album with the band, HELL'S DITCH.
Then there was Strummerville, the enclave for creatives he established at the Glastonbury Festival, which is still going. A great musician and a great human.
