About this artwork
In Robin Ballard’s “Elements” series she explores ways to visually interpret chemical elements, and naturally occurring phenomena. In “Floating” the artist began by applying thick lines of white paint to the canvas. Then, using a scraper, she applied various colors of florescent paint, which she then pushed into the crevasses of the white paint, creating a textured surface. The colored shapes seem to move in a horizontal direction over the canvas…
and because of the thin application of paint, they appear to be light, almost weightless. The sides of the painting have been painted, so it has a finished feel. It is also stretched on a frame and is easy to hang.
