The bird depicted in the painting is based on Lawes’s Parotia Bird-of-Paradise found in Papua New Guinea. What makes this bird-of-paradise somewhat unique are the delicate feathers that sprout from the male’s head. The artist began the work by painting the background with streaks of light and dark purple. She then added a wash of gold acrylic paint, adding texture to it by the addition of a resist technique.
