The name for the painting comes from its colors: purple and gold. In ancient times the color purple and pure gold were costly commodities, and because of this both were associated with rulers and royalty. In the painting, various shades of gold line the canvas interspersed with light and dark purple dots. The overall picture is that of an abstract landscape.
