About this artwork
The paintings entitled “White Wash” are part of a limited series, which addresses the imprisonment of one of China's most known artist and activist, Ai Weiwei. The imagery used in White Wash are taken from traditional Chinese paper cut patterns which are then painted over using white acrylic. Some of the canvases have been stitched together, to enforce the notion of clothing, because while imprisoned the only thing Ai Weiwei could do with his hands…
was to wash his clothes. The idea behind the work is an attempt to depict change, when traditional, or cliché notions of Chinese art are set aside and cleaned away for something new.
