About this artwork
These spectacular cliffs in the Westfjords of Iceland are home to millions of seabirds and host up to 40% of the world population of some species. Dont venture close to the edge as puffin burrows erode them and make them very fragile!
This area was the location of an heroic rescue by local farmers of English fishermen whose boat had broken up on the rocks. This was just after World war 2 and using basic equipment they rescued all aboard including… some with broken limbs. Considering that this was in deep winter, the drop is over 1,000 feet and the rocks were covered in ice and bird excreta it makes you marvel at the rescuers bravery.
