"Opening one's eyes" is part of a neo-expressionist tradition where text and image merge to directly address the viewer.
The work is saturated with quotations, notably that of Wassily Kandinsky affixed on a piece of yellowed paper: "Lend your ear to the music, open your eye to the painting and... don't think!".
The eyes are windows onto other worlds. The left eye contains an ethereal, almost classical silhouette, while the right eye evokes a distant… galaxy. It's an invitation to see beyond the surface.
The mouth, a saturated and pop purple, becomes the chromatic focal point, sealed by an enigmatic message.
It is a work that rejects immediate intellectualization in favor of pure emotion.
