About this artwork
This mixed media dyptich ( one half of the oil painting is covered in metal mesh) tells a story of two events , separated by 70 years, but having the same impact. The left side takes place in 1944 and focuses on the passenger ship the " Saint Louis" that carries 945 Jewish refugees trying to escape from Nazi violence in Europe, seeking sanctuary in first , Cuba then the United States and being turned away from both ports. The ship had to return…
to Europe where more than half of its passengers were murdered.
The right side shows the present southern border where many seeking sanctuary from violence are also being turned away.
