About this artwork
In this piece, I capture a quiet, intimate moment wrapped in soft, gentle light and shadow. The delicate folds and subtle textures invite calm reflection, blending realism with a serene, almost dreamlike stillness. I wanted to convey vulnerability and peaceful solitude, bringing a soothing, contemplative energy into your space, where the smallest details evoke warmth and tranquility. The background image is my late husband's shadow on the surface… of water. The title 'Feather Light' refers to a letter he wrote me in which he included a white feather, which letter said 'You are as light as a feather'
Rosemary Sloot, a Canadian painter with parents from the Netherlands, uses oils, watercolors, and chalk pastels to explore themes of immigration, memory, and the natural world. She masterfully combines photo-based realism with illusionistic techniques, manipulating carefully collected objects and chance photography to evoke magic and mystery in her compositions. As artist chronicle her emotionally charged works convey both the beauty of discovery and the profound pain of loss, inspiring viewers to reflect on their own histories and relationships. She graduated from the Nova Scotia Collage of Art and Design with a Bachelor's and from the University of Alberta with a Master's, both in Painting. She was a part time teacher for twenty-two years and taught at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont.in the 1980's. Her works are included in a number of major corporate collections in Canada and in private collections in Canada, the USA, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands and England.
