The background image is a detail of my late husband's shadow on the surface of water. Superimposed on this background is a tiny image of a slip I wore as an infant. The shells reference the shell subject matter that my husband and I often used in our paintings.
Rosemary Sloot, a Canadian painter with parents from the Netherlands, uses oils, watercolors, and chalk pastels to explore themes of immigration, memory, and the natural world. She masterfully combines photo-based realism with illusionistic techniques, manipulating carefully collected objects and chance photography to evoke magic and mystery in her compositions. As artist chronicle her emotionally charged works convey both the beauty of discovery and the profound pain of loss, inspiring viewers to reflect on their own histories and relationships. She graduated from the Nova Scotia Collage of Art and Design with a Bachelor's and from the University of Alberta with a Master's, both in Painting. She was a part time teacher for twenty-two years and taught at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont.in the 1980's. Her works are included in a number of major corporate collections in Canada and in private collections in Canada, the USA, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands and England.
