The figure in this painting is in the midst of an unknowable journey. She may be sleepwalking, perhaps this walk through a moonlit forest is more a fragment of a continuing dream than an actual journey.
The technique used is Grisaille, a kind of monochromatic painting which is actually made up of a palette of 8 colours. They are painted on rabbit sized linen without primer, the surface colour and texture of the linen itself is an integral part of… the look of the paintings. This is a very difficult approach, as any mark made on this surface cannot be erased or effectively painted over without spoiling the look of the piece, so each mark requires careful consideration.
