I dedicated the entire first weekend in May 2026 to Suminagashi. It's always a silent dialogue with the water.
This Suminagashi painting depicts surfaces crisscrossed with delicate, flowing lines, accompanied by soft, nuanced hues. They appear as traces of movement—like wind on water or thoughts unfolding. Each curve possesses its own depth, each structure a quiet intensity.
This work radiates a calm yet vibrant energy. It invites you to pause,… let your gaze wander, and be carried away by the dynamism of its forms. For me, it embodies change and freedom—and the quiet beauty that arises when you trust the flow of things.
Sabine Zichnowitz is a freelance artist with over 25 years of experience and trained in painting under Jens Kilian. She specializes in Suminagashi, the traditional Japanese art form of floating ink on water. Through the reduction to black, white, and a few select ink colors, and the use of lightweight washi paper, her works radiate lightness, transparency, and a unique aesthetic. Her art is unobtrusive, creating a haven of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life and conveying profound sensitivity, clarity, and tranquility. As a provisional highlight of her work, Sabine Zichnowitz published the book 'Suminagashi - The Art of Becoming Still with Moving Images' in 2025. She is currently intensively engaged in creating large-format, high-quality Suminagashi paintings.
