This series is an attempt to capture the action of expression out of context. Unlike the women of magazine adverts - inert, amiable and awaiting the impressions of the viewer - these gestures are unselfconscious, everyday, universal and not intended for immortalisation.
In the absence of any storyline the viewer… must project their own personal drama.

Sal Jones' works reinterpret the stereotypical portrait. The U.K. based artist, who has extensively exhibited nationally, suggests a story or emotional state through color, mark-making, expression, and titles. Jones often employs fictional characters, film references, and images that may seem familiar as a commentary on contemporary life. Working with photography is a starting point for her artistic process, she paints directly onto canvas, building up layers from washes and texture, as well as combining brushwork with a palette knife.
