About this artwork
This particular painting is inspired by a scene from a French thriller, starring Chiara Mastroianni and directed by Claire Denis. Cropped and re-interpreted, this work is all about the expression in the eyes. The artist re-animates the captured still by the use of gestural mark making and a strong, contrasting palette.
Many of Sal’s works use subjects appropriated from cinema, crime dramas, Film Noir and suspense thrillers. Her paintings, exploit… the conventions of cinematography; heavy cropping, close-ups, angled shots, saturated colours. The use of dialogue for titles, invite the viewer to participate or respond. The title literally has the subject questioning us…. As viewers we are not only in the position of voyeur, but also a confidant, or antagonist.

Sal Jones' works reinterpret the stereotypical portrait. The U.K. based artist, who has extensively exhibited nationally, suggests a story or emotional state through color, mark-making, expression, and titles. Jones often employs fictional characters, film references, and images that may seem familiar as a commentary on contemporary life. Working with photography is a starting point for her artistic process, she paints directly onto canvas, building up layers from washes and texture, as well as combining brushwork with a palette knife.
