This painting is based on a photograph taken in Poland just before the second world war. The woman portrayed was lost in the war. The photo captures her carefree and beautiful step. She has no idea that this is her last summer. The painting captures this fleeting moment. The landscape in the background comes from other vintage photos of the war itself. The photos are from near her hometown. In the foreground are piano keys that also look like a fence.…
These have symbolic meaning, the passage of time, music, and pattern. The dots on the dress also recall pattern, and stars. This painting reminds us that each days is fragile... and beautiful. The rendering of monochromatic photos echoes Gerhard Richter.

Sally K. Smith is an experienced painter from the United States whose works have been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Her background in music as a concert pianist influences how she approaches her artistic practice; she sees her work as a passage of time, not unlike listening to a Bach prelude.
