Discover the creation in interiors
This is from a series painted in 2007. I was living in Bristol, South West Virginia and witnessed a very rural, local landscape slowly turn from farmland to industries serving the major Interstate that passed through the region. The paintings are less a judgment on that process than a recognition of mankind's inevitable effects on landscape and of how these two supposedly separate forces interact. Some of these images were taken from video stills…
filmed from the dashboard of my car. This particular painting is of a modern, fairly anonymous house. The landscape in the region is very unique and yet the intrusion of franchise culture and cookie-cutter housing gives the impression that this could be anywhere. I kept this as a sepia under painting as it gives a faded, slightly historical air to something very present and modern.
