About this artwork
This painting is from a series taken from police mugshots. The subjects are anonymous and I consciously avoided any knowledge of why they were arrested or of who they are. They speak to me somehow of the brutality and dehumanizing effects of the internet. Many of the photos I worked on were taken from sites where viewers were encouraged to write (often abusive) comments and some of the titles were taken from these remarks. I found the reactions…
of women to the police camera somehow more interesting than those of men. The latter tended to show a predictable defiance or hostility where as many of the female subjects revealed a conflicting mix of resignation and anger. The title here refers both to the felony she was charged with as well as the vacant expression on her face.

Sam Morrow is an experienced painter from the United States whose work has been featured in solo and group shows internationally. Growing up in an artistic family, Morrow developed his current style investigating the virtual world and the dehumanizing of the individual via the internet. Working exclusively in oil paints, he creates figurative work, close up portraits, and landscapes that explore unconventional subject matter.
